The vehicle control system has a module (24) with a control circuit (10) which processes signals from sensors (12) which monitor switch operations (14,16) and which produces control signals for indicators/displays (26). The control module can also process signals from a microphone (20). The processed signals are passed to a central processor via a databus (22). The main control module, with connections to separate circuits, is mounted away from the control module and includes protection circuits for the attached consumer units. A typical control module is a control console mounted on the steering column.
