Compounds useful as intermediates for industrially advantageously producing (thio)semicarbazide derivatives used as feedstocks for herbicides. The benzene derivatives and the benzofuran derivatives are respectively represented by general formulae (I) and (II), wherein R<1> and R<2> are the same or different and each represents a halogeno, a lower alkyl, a lower haloalkyl, a lower alkoxy, or cyano; R<4> represents a lower alkyl; R<3> and R<5> are the same or different and each represents hydrogen or a lower alkyl; and Z represents nitro, amino, or a group YCN (wherein Y represents sulfur or oxygen).
