The invention relates to a method for removing one or several layers by laser, with self-regulating process limitation. According to the invention, the removal takes place during short periods of interaction with laser light of such a wavelength that it is so heavily absorbed by one part of the total composite (either the part which is being removed or the part which is being retained), that the removal threshold of the material concerned is exceeded, and the absorption of laser light of the same intensity by the other part of the total composite (the part which is being retained or the part which is being removed) is so low that this removal threshold is not reached.
