A glass having a softening point above 350 DEG C/s2 and capable of transmitting electromagnetic radiations of 6.5-10.5 microns wavelength consists essentially of sulphides and contains 13-53% of germanium. The ingredients may be in the form of 20-75% GeS and 10-80% S and any remainder a compatible sulphide e.g. GeS2, GaS, In2S3, As2S3, SrS, SnS, or ZnS; alternatively, there may be up to 100% GeS2.
