The invention comprises an epoxidized beta polymer of diallyl phthalate, preferably having an oxirone content of 0,6 to 3,6% by weight, which may be made by partially epoxidizing the diallyl phthalate beta polymer by reacting said polymer with hydrogen peroxide and a cyclic anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid wherein the oxygen-containing anhydride ring is a five membered ring containing four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom, such as phthalic or succinic anhydride, at temperatures above about 20 DEG C. The epoxidized products are soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, toluene and xylene, from which they can be applied as liquid coatings by spraying, brushing or casting, in conjunction with a curing agent, for example, a peroxide, such as benzoyl peroxide, to form after drying and curing a tough adhesive coating.ALSO:Epoxy compounds are made by reacting an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing at least one unconjugated ethylenic group with hydrogen peroxide and a cyclic anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid wherein the oxygen-containing anhydride ring is a five-membered ring containing four carbon atoms and one oxygen atom, at temperatures above about 20 DEG C. The cyclic anhydrides include those of saturated aromatic saturated aliphatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acids, preferably phthalic anhydride and succinic anhydride. Suitable unsaturated compounds are unsaturated fatty hydrocarbons, fatty acids and esters, such as those present in naturally occurring oils, allyl esters of organic acids, cycloalkenes, dicyclopentadiene, aliphatic esters of D 4-tetrahydro-phthalic acid and styrene. Preferably 30 to 70% aqueous hydrogen peroxide is used and the reaction is effected below 60 DEG C. An inert organic liquid may be present if desired. |
