The following are claimed: (1) a catalyst based on amorphous partially hydrated zirconium hydroxide that is doped with 0.01-20 atom% copper and/or 0.01-20 atom% nickel and has a BET surface area of at least 50 m<2>/g; (2) preparing 3-hydroxyquinuclidine by reducing quinuclidin-3-one with a secondary alcohol in the presence of amorphous partially hydrated zirconium oxide.
