<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound, colorless, negatively charged, not containing a heavy metal, capable of exhibiting a high electric charge, also a good starting property of the electric charge, a stability with time and an environmental stability, an producing a stable toner, and useful for an electrophotographic toner. SOLUTION: This resorcinol tetramer derivative is a compound of the formula R1 to R4 are each H, a (substituted) alkyl or a (substituted) aryl; R5 to R12 are each OH or a group of the formula: OSO2 R13 [R13 is a lower alkyl or a (substituted) aryl]; R14 to R17 are each H or R5 ; one or more of R5 to R17 is a group of the formula: OSO2 R13 ; (n) is 0-4}, and e.g. tetraheptylresorcinol cyclotetramer/octatosylate. The compound of the formula is obtained by reacting a raw material such as resorcinol and pyrogallol with a corresponding aldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst to obtain the tetramer, and reacting the tetramer with a corresponding sulfonic acid chloride in the presence of an alkali.</p> |
