The cylindrical rotor (20), running in bearings in the stator (10) end-plates, fits closely in the elliptical stator bore (12), leaving crescent-shaped chambers on the major bore diameter. Each chamber has ports connected to inlet (60) and outlet (62) stator gas passages, and is swept by successive sliding rotor blades (36). Oil supplied to the blade slots lubricates the blades and keeps them pressed against the chamber walls to effect compression. To achieve simultaneous oil distribution, slots are interconnected in pairs, e.g. at rotor mid-point, by passages (50) bored, in the plane of each slot, from its bottom into that of the next slot. Oil entering any slot at the end is thus distributed at once to all the slots.
