A shaft 13 is driven in one direction only, from a shaft 1 driven in either direction by a self-starting synchronous motor; a sleeve 8 threaded on screw thread 5 on shaft 1 has two discs 6, 7 which abut a disc 9 on shaft 13 according to the direction of rotation of shaft 1; collars 3, 4 on-the shaft 1 define the end positions of sleeve 8 and vanes 14 or a light friction brake, not shown, produces drag on sleeve 8 to cause the necessary relative rotation of sleeve 8 and the screw-thread 5.
