[Also in Divisions G1 and G3] A tufting machine is modified for use in a programmed electric control system (see Division G3) by coupling the drive shaft 63 for a needle-bar 10, driven by eccentrics 62, to a drive motor, not shown, through a magnetic clutch 64. In operation a master composition 14 is scanned line-by-line by a flashing light illuminating elemental areas of the line and the derived light pulses are analysed by a computor 18 and converter 19 intG binary-coded signals, representative of which 27 standard colours match the scanned elemental areas. The binary-coded signals are recorded on a magnetic tape moving with a conveyer 12 and actuate corresponding reading heads 50 to cause a bit of yarn to be fed from a spool 15 by a charging device 16 on to the conveyer 12. When yarn bits for the whole of a line of the master have been transferred to the conveyer a reading pulse is read by a head 61 so that when the conveyer 12 is in proper coincidence with the array of hooks 11 the magnetic clutch 64 is actuated and the yarn bits are transferred to a backing material 13. |
