The murine cDNA (I) for nCL-3 calpain of 2459 bp, its allelic variants encoding a protein having 60-100% homology at the amino acid (aa) level, analogues and derivatives are new. Also new are: (1) the corresponding human cDNA (Ia) of 1975 bp; (2) gene constructs containing (I) and (Ia) plus regulatory sequences; and (3) proteins (II) encoded by (I).
