A method of forming solid rivets to improve the rivets' resistance to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. The present invention comprises a method of forming solid rivets to improve the rivets' resistance to fatigue and stress corrosion cracking. In accordance with the method, a rivet blank (38) approximately the same diameter as the head of the finished rivet is used. This rivet blank (28) is forced into a die (36) to extrude the tapered region (40) and the shank (42) of the finished rivet. The fabrication process provides more uniform cold working at the junction of the shank (42) and the tapered region (40) of the rivet, and better orients the flow lines in this region. Alternate embodiments are disclosed.
