The invention includes a method of screening a DNA sequence for the ability to express an enzyme which catalyzes post-translational modification of a protein, the method comprising cloning in a bacterial cell a test DNA in tandem with a DNA encoding a substrate for the enzyme, coexpressing the test and the substrate DNA in the bacterial cell and determining whether the substrate has been modulated, wherein modulation of the substrate is an indication that the test DNA expresses the enzyme.
