The powder coating system has several coating units (24), which are arranged essentially vertical one above the other. A workpiece is moved past the coating units, and a monitoring unit (32,34) is provided for determining a powder flow, through the respective coating units. Each coating unit (14) is assigned a powder path, consisting of a powder supply line (30) to the coating unit also a powder conveying unit. The monitoring unit includes several detecting systems, which respectively are coupled with a powder path of a coating unit. The monitoring unit delivers a signal, if the powder flow through at least one coating unit, is under a specified desired value.
