PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce ethylene useful as a raw material for a petroleum chemical product and a macromolecular product in a high activity and yield by bringing ethane into contact with a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of a specific catalyst. SOLUTION: Ethane is subjected to a gas phase catalytic oxidation reaction with a gas containing molecular oxygen of 0.1-50 molar times as much as the ethane in the presence of a catalyst including a complex metal oxide of the formula [M is Sr and/or Ba; M' is La, Ce, Sm, Yb or Lu; X is a halogen; when (a) is 1.0, (b) is 0.01-3.29, (c) is 0.01-3.29, (d) is 1-6 and (e) is a value determined by the valence of each constituting element] to provide the objective ethylene in high activity and selectivity in the method for producing the ethylene. The catalyst is obtained by measuring prescribed amounts of Bi2 O3 , BiOx , a lanthanoid oxyhalide and a halogenated alkaline earth metal so that the metal atomic ratio may be in a prescribed proportion, sufficiently pulverizing and mixing the measured materials, and firing the pulverized and mixed material at a high temperature of 400-1,200 deg.C. |
