PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a nucleus-chlorinated aromatic compound having a cyano group by gas-phase catalytic chlorination of an aromatic compound having a cyano group using an excellent activated carbon catalyst keeping its catalytic activity for a long time (i.e., long catalyst life). SOLUTION: This nucleus-chorinated aromatic compound is obtained by gas phase reaction of a gas containing an aromatic compound having a cyano group with chlorine gas using activated carbon as a catalyst, wherein the average pore radius of the activated carbon is 12.2 Å or larger as determined by the nitrogen-adsorption method, and the cumulative pore volume of the activated carbon is 0.45 g/cc or larger as determined by the steam-adsorption method for a pore radius range of 5-100 Å. |
