The device uses an electromechanical transducer, coupled to at least one transmitter (23) and at least one receiver (24) for mechanical oscillation of a mechanical oscillator into the container at its resonant frequency and detection of the oscillation. The receiver is coupled to an evaluation stage (9) for comparing the mechanical oscillation frequency with a reference frequency, providing a signal, indicating that the oscillator is covered by the container contents when the detected oscillation frequency is below the reference frequency.
