PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing the magnetic head capable of facilitating designing of manufactured product and manufacturing the magnetic head with high yield and good reproducibility. SOLUTION: In the magnetic head manufacturing method having a process of forming a soft magnetic film on a nonmagnetic material member, when residual stress is denoted asσ(dyne/cm<2> ), and magnetostrictionλ, constituting materials are selected, and manufacturing conditions are controlled in order to satisfy the following expression; -1000<=σ×λ<=500. Such a high output of the magnetic head as >=-2 dB can be obtained by controlling a value ofσ×λ. Then, when a Sendust (R) film is used for the soft magnetic film, the value ofσ×λis expressed in this case as follows: -σ×λ=(160×10<-7> -αsub. )×(Tann. -20)×1.86×10<12>×(-0.03×T×10<-6> +20×0.03×10<-6> +λR. T. ), whereαsub. is denoted as a coefft. of thermal expansion, and Tann. is heat treatment temp., while T as magnetic head using temp., and thenλR. T. is magnetostriction of the soft magnetic film at 20 deg.C.
