PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent unnecessary polarized light in a substrate from being coupled with a light guide again, to obtain characteristics with a high extinction ratio, and to facilitate the manufacture and handling. SOLUTION: This light guide element has >=1 Y-shaped branch part and linear parts connecting to it on the main surface of a substrate 10 with electrooptic effect and also has electrodes 16 formed on the substrate surface in parallel to the light guides of the linear parts. A removing means for unnecessary light emitted from the light guides is provided not on the light guides. As this removing means, there are a proton exchange light guide film 14 for a case wherein a titanium heat diffusion light guide 12 is used, a light absorbing film and a titanium heat diffusion light guide film of metal for a case wherein a proton exchange light guide is used, etc. |
