摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To minimize an optical insertion loss by optimizing mode matching with an optical device. SOLUTION: An EAM 40 is constituted so as to minimize the mode mismatching with an optical fiber cable. An optical waveguide 48 is formed as a PIN structure body 48, and an intrinsic layer 42 is sandwiched between plural doped layers 46, 50, 58 and 52, 54, 60. The layers 58 and layers 58 and 60 function as an optical waveguide layer for optimizing optical junction, and either N type material or P type material is doped. Twelve pieces of quantum wells consisting alternately of well layer 60 and barrier layer 62 are formed in an intrinsic layer 42 since the mode size of the device is increased for mode matching with the optical fiber. The well alternately formed by well layer 60 and barrier layer 62 are sandwiched as a whole between a pair of outside barrier layers 64 and 66.
