<p>Described is a detergent composition comprising 5 to 80% soda ash, 5 to 24% surfactant and 0.5 to 25% of a zeolite builder, on a detergent composition dry weight basis, wherein up to 100% of the zeolite builder is replaced with an amount of a maleate copolymer effective to function as a builder, the maleate copolymer being characterized by a weight average molecular weight of 500 to 7,0000, a residual total monomer content of less than 1%, on a copolymer weight basis, and comprising at least 50 mole percent of maleate monomer, whereby at least 70 mole percent of the carboxylic acid charge on the maleate monomer is neutralized prior to polymerization, 10 to 50 mole percent of acrylate monomer and 1 to 10 mole percent of a nonionic comonomer; and wherein the detergent composition containing the maleate copolymer inhibits deposition of water hardness salts and the detergent composition comprising the maleate copolymer is characterized by improved detergency relative to the detergent composition without the maleate copolymer.</p> |
