PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent cataphoresis during high-frequency lighting by taking into account the leakage current from a discharge lamp to an appliance main body or to ground. SOLUTION: A discharge lamp La is lighted by a half-bridge type inverter circuit INV. An impedance element Lx for suppressing high frequencies is inserted between the high-voltage side of the inverter circuit INV and the discharge lamp La. Since the higher harmonic components of the outputs of the inverter circuit INV are suppressed by the impedance element Lx and are not input to the discharge lamp La, leakage current is reduced. As a result, the difference in leakage current between the high and low voltage sides of the discharge lamp La is reduced, no potential gradient is formed, and mercury ions are not localized, so that the occurrence of cataphoresis is prevented.
