A maize-harvester includes a frame carrying a pair of juxtaposed rotatable smooth snapping rollers 21, a pair of rotatable, non-smooth, conveyer-rollers 22 beneath the snapping rollers,all the rollers sloping upwardly and rearwardly, and, above the snapping rollers, gathering chains 23 having fingers 37 which extend over the snapping rollers and which are movable along the rollers rearwardly and upwardly so that the maize-ears are removed by the chains as they are broken off by the snapping rollers. The snapping rollers are preceded by feeding chains 24 running convergently in casings 25 to define a gathering opening 26 for the maizeplants 73. Each snapping roller has a forwardly-tapering rotating nose-piece 29 beyond the front bearing 27 in which it is mounted. Each conveyer-roller has a similar nose-piece 31. The shafts of the snapping rollers carry rotating conical end-pieces 9, which are driven in the opposite direction to the snapping rollers, to assist in clearing the stripped cobs, which then pass to the shelling unit 12 and finally to a bagging and storage platform 13. The gathering chains 23 and feeding chains 24 are driven from the groundwheels of the machine so that the fingers 43 are stationary relative to the crop. The rollers are driven from a gearbox 49 connected to the tractor through a jointed shaft 19. |
