Thermochromic composites change colour according to temperature. Using a ring of such material on the mouth of a domestic mixer tap would indicate whether a previous user had left excessively hot water in the tap that could scald the unwary next user. Material would be chosen that turned red at a temperature of 38 degrees Celsius and above and blue at a temperature of 21 degrees and below. Pink/purple colours would show at intermediate temperatures.
