The stepped profile shaft (20) of the golf club is wound on a stepped profile former to form inner and outer step profiles. The thickness of the profiles decreases from the handgrip to the head, with the wall thickness larger or smaller than the differences in diameter of each step. The club is formed by spiral winding of fibre layers around the former, in two directions. The angle of the windings is steeper for the narrow end of the shaft. The step profile between adjacent sections is specially reinforced by the windings.
