The protection is provided by a barrier (13) displaced by a spring so it closes the slot in all the directions in which it is accessible. The barrier is a plate (7) that can tilt in the vertical direction about a transverse pivot (12,13). The plate has a rectangular hole to allow the head (11) to project into the plate when no card is inserted. When a card is inserted it passes under the plate, and pushes the head down against a spring (14). The outer edge (21) of the barrier has a chamfered edge which allows the barrier to be lifted when an object is inserted with a force greater than a set threshold value.
