A cylindrical bar-type strainer (14) for a screw press surrounds a rotary feeding screw (12) for a material to be separated into a liquid and a solid phase. Longitudinal strainer bars (18), e.g. in the form of flat steel bars, are disposed with intermediate slots formed by internal teeth (38) on lateral support rings (22). Between adjacent strainer bars (18), a dividing plate (20) is disposed. The dividing plate has a substantially smaller dimension circumferentially than the space between two adjacent strainer bars (18) as measured in the same direction, so that each dividing plate (20) divides said space into two strainer slots (SS), one at either side of respective dividing plate (20), the flow area of said strainer slots (SS) being changeable by replacing the dividing plates (20) by thinner or thicker dividing plates.
