The gas return circuit to the fresh charge inlet of the engine has an intake passage (1) extending to a fresh air metering chamber (3) from which the combustion chamber intake passages extend (5). The fresh air intake has an exhaust gas return chamber (11) positioned in the main intake duct (21). The exhaust gas return duct (9) opens into an annular channel (23) of the gas return chamber. The annular channel (23) extends for most of the circumference of the duct and opens to it through an annular gap (24). The surface ratio of the opening of the return gas duct in the chamber to the outlet face of the annular gap is at least close to 1:1.
