The optical delay line uses waveguide gratings (2,3) having a position-dependent periodicity, with a localised reversible variation of the Bragg wavelength used for variation of the group and phase propagation times for the light reflected by the grating. The reversible variation of the Bragg wavelength is effected via a mechanical or thermal effect, or by application of a magnetic or electric field.
