<p>A hydraulic power steering pump is driven from a vehicle engine through an electromagnetically-controlled clutch. The clutch is engaged by springs or permanent magnets and disengaged electromagnetically to ensure that the pump will operate if the control fails. Control of the clutch may be in response to steering wheel torque or vehicle speed. The clutch can be wet or dry, single plate or multiplate.</p> |
