A load cell which has a beam portion (13) configured for single bending and which is displaced from the line of action of the load force, the principal axis of the cell at the location of a strain gauge (18) on the beam being not at right angles to the line ofaction of the forces. Preferably the beam portion is parallel to the line of action of the forces, which are applied to arms (14, 15).
