Combatting pests (e.g. insects or fungi, e.g. bark beetles, oak wilt and wood wasps) in wood (e.g. tree trunks, imported wood or exported wood, especially oak, e.g. Quercus rubra) which is present in gas-tight treatment areas (e.g. containers, tarpaulins, tents, store rooms, transporting vessels or pressure chambers) comprises introduction of a gassing agent which enters into the pests and kills them. The gassing agent is sulphuryl fluoride and/or an alkyl isothiocyanate.
