The present invention pertains to the field of test and measurement techniques and may be used for increasing the sensivity and universal capacities of methods and devices for checking the tightness of articles. The method of the present invention comprises using a cylinder and a piston to generate a pressure drop on the walls of the article to be checked. The tightness is determined from the volumetric change of the chamber at the back of the piston and by recording the displacement of said piston using marks. The piston is capable of displacement under the application of an increasing or decreasing force and may be mounted in the cylinder using a resilient bracket. The device may also be fitted with a converter in the shape of a casing with a membrane, wherein said casing is filled with a coloured liquid and is connected to a transparent tube. The method and device of the present invention may also be used for measuring the volume of an article.
