Monitoring system for road vehicles, particularly in collision situations

The monitoring system is in form of a forward looking video camera (3) fitted on a road vehicle. Additional cameras can be used to monitor other directions. Image data is entered into a memory (6) e.g. solid state or magnetic tape. The data can be subjected to a compression process to reduce the size of memory. The system has a processor (9) to control the operation and also records information such as speed, acceleration. The recording process can be triggered when the acceleration/deceleration exceeds a set threshold.
