The compression ignition internal combustion engine has the main fuel injection in the final phase of the compression stroke and with a metered amount of fuel injected during the suction phase. This amount of fuel is derived from a programme in relation to the engine performance and provides sufficient hydrocarbons to reduce the nitrous oxides in the exhaust gasses by producing a higher proportion of nitrogen dioxide. The additional fuel is injected into each cylinder by individual aerosol jets or it is injected into the inlet manifold by a single aerosol jet.
