Reducing heavy metal content of biogenic-organic substrates (I) comprises electrolysis using special sacrificial anodes. (I) are mixed with >= 0.7 part weight animal excrement with respect to dry organic matter. Process water is added, before or after mixing, so that the dry content is /} 13 wt.%. The mixture is subjected to anaerobic treatment and he fermented residue is electrolysed to deposit the harmful heavy metals at the cathode.
