<p>The invention relates to a method for in-situ immobilisation of heavy metals and/or sulphate in water-containing zones by microbiological preparation of sulphide using sulphate-reducing bacteria, a substrate for the sulphate-reducing bacteria being introduced into the zone and the density of the substrate at the temperature prevailing in the zones differing by at least 10 % from the density of the water present in the zones.</p>
