An acid compound (or salt thereof) comprising at least two nitrogen groups and at least one carboxylic acid group (or salt thereof) is prepared from a nitrogen compound comprising at least two nitrogen groups and at least one carboxylic acid group protected with a protecting group by removing the protecting group from the carboxylic acid group of the nitrogen compound. The product is e.g. ethylenediaminedisuccinic acid.
