The fibre optic coupler includes three GRIN lenses (12,22,32) with collimated ends (14,24,34) and focused ends (15,25,35). The second and third GRIN lenses have an optical centre. The second and third GRIN lenses are cut along chords parallel to their optical centres to form a planar border area. The planar border areas of the second and third GRIN lenses are adjacent. The collimated ends of the second and third GRIN lenses are adjacent and optically connected to the collimated end of the first GRIN lens so that collimated light (18) from the first GRIN lens is transmitted to the collimated ends of the second and third GRIN lenses. The collimated end of the first GRIN lens is smaller than the combined collimated ends of the second and third GRIN lenses so that all of the light leaving the collimated end of the first GRIN lens is received by the collimated ends of the second and third GRIN lenses. An optical fibre (16,26,36) is connected to the focused end of each of the GRIN lenses for transmitting light signals to and from the GRIN lenses.
|
