PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the possibility of reduction in a communication speed depending on the performance of relay nodes by denoting a communication speed of each node by a plurality of communication levels in a system where communication is conducted among a plurality of nodes interconnected by a bus. SOLUTION: On the occurrence of a bus reset, the master-slave relationship of each node is automatically decided and each node sends its own ID packet to an IEEE 1394 serial bus in a prescribed sequence (steps S1, S2). A node acting like a bus manager uses maximum communication speed information of a physical layer controller (PHY) described ID packets sent by each node to generate a speed map (step S3) and then reads a configuration ROM 5 of other nodes (step S4) and corrects the information relating to nodes where the maximum communication speed of a LINK is slower than the maximum communication speed of the PHY (step S5).
