摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance a display characteristic (brightness of display) by displaying a picture while controlling the transmission of a light made incident by being guided with light transmission members in accordance with a picture signal. SOLUTION: Natural light entering from a lens 1 is sepatrated into a transmitting linearly polarized light X and a reflecting linearly polarized light Y by a PBS ( polarizing beam splitting) 3. The linearly polarized light X transmitting the PBS 3 is emitted to a TN liquid crystal cell 4 and its phase is changed byπo be emitted to a lens 2. The linearly polarized light Y reflecting on the PBS 3 is emitted to a reflection mirror 5 and is squarely reflected on it to be emitted to the lens 2. Two linearly polarized lights X, Y whose advancing directions and phases are both completed are collected in the lens 2 to be emitted to a reflection type liquid crystal panel 7 as a linearly polarized light Z. The linearly polarized light Z is emitted in a B→A direction by the reflection type liquid crystal panel 7 and follows the path reversely to display a picture in the A direction. That is, much of the incident light can be utilized in a picture display by making the separated lights incident on the reflection type liquid crystal panel 7 while completing their vibration directions in one direction.
