PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce methylglyoxal useful as a synthetic raw material for medicines, agrochemicals and organic chemicals in a high selectivity and yield by bringing hydroxyacetone into contact with a molecular oxygen in the presence of a specified iron phosphate-based catalyst. SOLUTION: Hydroxyacetone is brought into contact molecular oxygen in an amount of 0.3-20 mol, especially preferably 0.4-5 mol based on 1 mol hydroxyacetone, fed as a molecular oxygen-containing gas (preferably gas or air having 10-30 vol.% O2 concentration and diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen gas) by using a material containing preferably 10-100 wt.%, especially preferably 20-100 wt.% FePO4 (tridymite type or quartz type) or Fe3 (P2 O7 )2 [αtype (Y phase),βtype (B phase), etc.] as a catalyst, preferably at 100-300 deg.C, especially preferably 130-280 deg.C, further preferably 150-230 deg.C, generally at ordinary pressure for 0.1-20 sec, especially preferably 0.2-10 sec in order to carry out oxidative dehydrogenation to provide the methylglyoxal.
