PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To increase the total input and output voltage ratio of a multiplex PWM cycloconverter by calculating the instantaneous value of output voltage command for the three-phase/single-phase PWM cycloconverter of a single unit depending on the difference between the maximum and minimum input power supply phase voltages and outputting the calculated instantaneous value. SOLUTION: Phase of the output voltage from three-phase/single-phase PWM cycloconverters 1-12 is controlled. Instantaneous value of output voltage command for the three-phase/single-phase PWM cycloconverters 2-12 of a single unit 17 (18, 19) is calculated to have a large value when the differenceΔe between the maximum and minimum input power supply phase voltages is large otherwise to have a small value. Since a total input and output voltage ratio comparable to that of a multiplex PWM cycloconverter, the total input and output voltage ratio of a multiplex PWM cycloconverter can be increased and the size of system can be reduced.
