PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for production of glass accurately judging whether gelation is sufficiently proceeded, and inhibiting generation of crack and break down of gel in the drying process, by measuring the supersonic wave damping coefficient of the inside of the gel, and drying after the damping coefficient become below a prescribed value in the aging process of the sol prepared by a adjusting raw material. SOLUTION: The sol is obtained by adding alcohol, water, and catalyst to raw material such as a metal alkoxide, metal oxide, liquid glass, etc., mixing and agitating to carry out hydrolysis. This sol is filled in a container 1 having a lid 1a, the supersonic damping coefficient is measured by oscillating a supersonic wave from a transducer 2 mounted on the bottom of the container 1, the supersonic wave reflected from the bottom of the container 1 and the supersonic wave propagated in the gel 5 and reflected at the liquid surface and reached to the bottom of the container 1, are processed by a computer 6, intervening through a sensor, a pulls oscillator 3, on oscilloscope 4, to afford the supersonic damping coefficient, the gelation is carried out until this observed value is lower than the prescribed value, then the gel 5 is dried and baked. |
