A remote controller (1) communicates with a computer by infra-red or radio. A search control (2), turned like a radio receiver tuning knob, explores a menu or list; this can be done quickly or slowly. One push on the activator button (3) selects the next lower level of menu structure; two rapid pushes return to a higher level. The computer responds with voice messages via the loudspeaker (4), using `text-to-speech' technology, without the driver needing to view the monitor.
