The invention concerns a method for the separation of used paper and used cardboard, whereby these are separated while they are being transported on a sorting line, lying in disorder. In order to automate the process and to relieve the worker charged with manual separation from his monotonous task, it is provided that the used paper and the used cardboard are irradiated with light of optionally varying wavelength in order to determine the exact position of the cardboard fractions to be separated, which can then mechanically be separated.
