Slow release microcapsules contain: (a) one or more excipients which are biodegradable polymers or copolymers having an intrinsic viscosity in the range 0.5 - 1.2 dl/g in chloroform; and (b) at least one active material such that the microcapsules liberate the active material(s) over a prolonged period, up to 3 months. Also claimed are: (i) a process for obtaining a water-soluble material having a high specific surface area,where the material is dissolved in water at about half its saturation concentration, then it is lyophilised rapidly at a temperature below -70 deg C, and the solid formed is crushed, preferably ultrasonically; (ii) triptorelin acetate and lanreotide acetate prepared by the process.
