The torque ratio of the rotating elements of a contra-rotating hydroelectric machine is maintained at a required value by an automatic control system. As shown, contra-rotating water wheels 1 and 2, which may constitute a turbine or pump impeller, in a water passage 4 are connected by concentric shafts 6, 5 to rotors 9,11 associated with armature windings 14 and 15, the currents in which are functions of the torque in the wheels 1. and 2 respectively. These currents are measured in a conventional comparator 18 the output from which is applied by way of an amplifier 19 and a governor 20 to control a pitch changing mechanism 17 for the wheel 2. Any deviation from a desired torque ratio results in a corrective change in the pitch of wheel 2 to re-establish the ratio. The torque-responsive input signals for comparator 18. may be derived from strain gauges associated with the shafts 5 and 6. |
