PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize high efficiency operation of an apparatus by operating the switching element of a power factor improving circuit to vary the DC voltage of a smoothing circuit stepwise depending on the operating conditions of a controller thereby enhancing the efficiency of an inverter and a motor. SOLUTION: Based on a speed command ω*, an inverter control circuit 14 determines a target DC voltage command VDC* which is then inputted to a converter control means 8 along with an operational command thereof. The converter control means 8 receives a smoothed DC voltage from a smoothing circuit 10 and matches the smoothed DC voltage with the DC voltage command VDC* the converter control means 8 delivers a drive signal to a converter drive circuit 7 so that a sine wave current synchronized with the power supply voltage flows through a power supply current detector 6 and a transistor is driven through the converter drive circuit 7.
