PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stage for forming a magnetic layer for improving the orientability of magnetic metallic particles and a process for producing a magnetic recording medium having good electromagnetic conversion characteristics corresponding to high-density recording. SOLUTION: This process has the stage for forming the magnetic layer on the surface of a nonmagnetic base 3 which is wound at least to a roll form and is set on a supply roll 5 while this nonmagnetic base 3 is wound to a take-up roll 5 within a vacuum chamber 2 of a vacuum vapor deposition apparatus 1. At this time, the process has a stage for drawing out the nonmagnetic base 3 wound to the roll form at least once and taking up the base on the take-up roll 8 in order to release the moisture contained in the nonmagnetic base 3 or the gases, etc., adsorbed thereon before the stage for forming the magnetic layer on the surface of the nonmagnetic base 3. The preferable vacuum degree in the vacuum chamber 2 is >=1×10<-5> to 10<-1> Pa.
